COIL - Collaborative Online International Learning

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) is an educational activity that brings together students and lecturers from different countries for collaborative projects within their teaching. Lecturers collaborate in designing the syllabus, while students engage in various collaborative activities.

In these hybrid teaching models, students attend face-to-face lectures at their respective universities, with their teachers, and supplement their learning through online forums and/or videoconferences with peers from other universities, to learn course content together and actively collaborate.

The online component of COIL, utilizing telecollaborative teaching scenarios and group work, fosters the development of international learning communities.

COIL contributes to the development of intercultural competence and the ability to collaborate in international groups, benefiting both students and teachers alike. These inclusive practices are also a cost-effective and sustainable approach to promoting international virtual student mobility .

COILS:

- can be integrated into any discipline.

- encourage collaborative learning.

- stimulate interactions, together with intercultural and inclusive dialogue.

- can have a duration of 5-12 weeks.

- can use any technological platform (Moodle, Webex, etc.).

- can take place during the whole course or take the form of a module integrated into the training course.

- are an activity assessed by the lecturer of the institutional course in which the students are enrolled.

HOW are they structured?

In general, a COIL is structured in the following phases:

1. The first phase consists of acquaintance and familiarisation with colleagues from foreign universities, involving introductions of the students, brainstorming and discussion activities, aimed at fostering intercultural group cohesion.

2. The second phase involves the definition of the projects of each group (theme, content). This phase allows students to express their interests and prepares them for effective collaborative work. At the end of this phase, working groups are created according to thematic affinities.

3. The third phase of the project focuses on collaborative work in thematic groups. In this phase, students in small groups activate their acquired knowledge by creating products or group discussions on the topic of collaboration.

4. The final phase involves the presentation of the work done (in any format agreed upon by the collaborating teachers), reflection on the training and the linguistic and intercultural aspects of collaboration, and a possible peer evaluation.

UniTo lecturers, can select the option “COIL” in the Lecture Register as a specific 'type of activity'.

Intercomprehension is a mode of communication in which interlocutors express themselves in their own language and understand the language of the other. This ability, based on mutual understanding between speakers of different languages, can be accelerated through specific teaching. Educational applications of intercomprehension promote plurilingualism, preserve multilingualism, enable the development of receptive skills and foster autonomy, linguistic, metalinguistic and cognitive awareness.

In a recent Recommendation (22/05/2019), entitled “On a Comprehensive Approach to Language Teaching and Learning”, the Council of Europe encourages member states to support the teaching of intercomprehension to find innovative teaching methods that enable European citizens to communicate with each other.

The UNITA Alliance promotes intercomprehension as a mode of communication between students, teachers, and administrative staff.

Generally applied within a language family (e.g. Romance, Germanic, Slavic, etc.), intercomprehension falls into several categories:

- Receptive written and oral intercomprehension: reading/listening to and understanding of texts in unfamiliar languages.

- Interactive written/oral intercomprehension: written or oral interaction with speakers of little or no known languages.

In the interaction phases, expert speakers use a set of strategies called 'interproduction' because' they know how to 'modulate' their language with respect to their interlocutors to make themselves understood.

INTERCOMPREHENSION COURSES in UNITO and UNITA:

The Teaching and Learning Center offers a Moodle course to help students create their Europass profile.

Il course provides information on registering for the platform and creating the Europass profile, which may contain information on education and training, work experience, and skills. It will then be explained how to create, store and share CVs and cover letters and how to find job vacancies and training opportunities in all European Union countries.
